This project explores the act of constantly “taking apart and putting back together” as a method of form-making, shifting away from ideas of perfection in design.These objects (characters) are results of intrigues in part-to-whole relationships, as well as an exploration of material re-use and tectonic connections.In collaboration with 555 Arts Detroit, an arts collective based in the Detroit, our team, lead by De Peter Yi, reevaluated forms of structural joineries. By studying the formwork and casting process of aluminum, we identified moments where we could invite free metal flow, absorb softer textures, or stretch expressions to create performative objects that spoke in higher relation to the spaces they occupied (and held together).&nbsp; stone center of inequality dynamics (2020)&nbsp; renovation ann arbor, mi involvement: - drawing set - interiors - furniture research - workshop facilitation and organization/design of activities for sessions - concept diagrams firm: - rvtr partners: - institute of social research, university of michigan learn more: - Stone CID - Progress and Updates The Stone Center for Inequality Dynamics, through the Rackham Grant, sought to renovate their new co-working area into an egalitarian and inclusive space that fostered mutual learning and scientific innovation while building a diverse intellectual community within the Sociology school.Throughout 2 focus group sessions, students and researchers were invited to consider personal methods and preferred environments for work and collaboration, expressing their ideas in conversations and text. Participants were then encouraged to draw ideal configurations in smaller groups, graduating eventually to a room wide workshop collaboration. Using a kit of acrylic furniture parts on a larger floor plan as a facilitating device, the group was able to cycle through multiple configurations while making joint decisions of the public to private distributions of available space.The resulting design is centerd around an open studio model, in which moveable furniture can shift into various formations for the multiple programs hosted in Together, the slabs and townhomes create spatial reciprocity across the site. The two types of townhomes—those perpendicular to slabs and those beneath—maintain a degree of privacy sufficient for conventional single-family dwelling. The slabs offer expansive, floor-through collective dwellings. Structurally and aesthetically, the project leans on Detroit’s material tradition of face brick over wood construction. In the townhomes, masonry-clad party walls and street facades are perceived as heavy barriers affording privacy. In the slabs, face brick and brick veneer are applied to private spaces universally, producing the effect of actually inhabiting a continuous masonry mass. In contrast, a more open aluminum curtain wall borders shared spaces across the site. Accommodating two private railways with a subway totaling nine lines throughout five floors, the rerouting of users is an equally weighted design undertaking as is the construction itself. The temporary plastic walls lined with cautionary green tape corrals speed-walkers to their platforms—within several uses one becomes accustomed to the sharp turns, sudden fluorescently blasted low height tunnels and metal stairways leading you up and down and up again… The most interesting aspect is what’s hidden behind these thin barriers. As passengers are taken through meandering reroutes, they’re also lead through many landscapes of noise signaling various stages of work.
